This section of the
Oregon Visitors Network focuses on the Mt Hood region of Oregon. Hood River, sitting along side the Columbia River some 60 miles east of Portland on Interstate Highway 84, offers the traveler a welcomed respite from the busy highway and a place to relax for the night or a place to play during an extended stay.
Long renowned for its magnificent setting in the Columbia River Gorge and its scenic drives through the picturesque fruit orchards of the Hood River Valley, the town of Hood River, (population 4,500), has become the northwest's most popular location for windsurfing.
The windsurfing community contributes millions of dollars to the local economy and has helped spawn the growth of other destination-type activities including biking, hiking, fishing, golf, wine tasting and farm and garden tours.
